Presents it at Korean trade show

As you might remember, in one of our articles published last week, we informed you about LG's latest developments in the area of displays (especially that 19-inch OLED screen), which were unveiled at the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) 2008, from Goyang City, Korea. However, it would seem that that wasn't the only surprise LG had in store, because the company apparently also showcased another very interesting prototype, namely a 15-inch double-sided LCD.

Since it was on its own turf, it's no wonder that LG went to some pretty great lengths in order to impress all the visitors. Thus, according to Hiroaki Kitahara, a technical writer for Japanese publication Nikkei Electronics (TechOn), reporting from the event, LG has unveiled a double-sided reflective LCD, which has a resolution of 512x384 and features a 14:1 contrast ratio.

Furthermore, this highly innovative solution has an aperture ratio of 46%, reflectance ratio of 20% and color gamut of 12%, respectively. Additionally, unlike most other LCDs, which go black when not in use, this particular one will go white. It's also important to mention the fact that we're dealing with an ECB-mode display, which means that it will provide better brightness capabilities due to the missing color-filter.

Besides the aforementioned double-sided LCD, the company also presented a 13.3-inch reflective display that provides a very good resolution, of around 1280 x 800 pixels, as well as a reflectance ratio of more than 20 percent.

Despite showcasing these two products, the Korean company has provided little insight on their real-life applications or the moment when they'll become commercially available. However, we could think of a couple of uses for double-sided LCD panels, including advertising and, perhaps, commerce-related applications (where both the customer and the operator should be able to view the display).
