14 DAY TRIAL // Recently, South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics announced plans to launch a tablet powered by Google's Android operating system before the end of the ongoing year. According to the company, the device should land on shelves sometime in the fourth quarter of the ongoing year, and should join an armada of Android-based mobile phones.
LG does not have a great presence on the Android segment of the mobile phone market, but it seems that 2010 should change that. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to come to the market with a wide range of phones powered by Google's mobile operating system. More that 20 Android-based devices should land from LG, it seems.
The aforementioned Android tablet would represent yet another step the company takes towards its commitment to prove that it can become one of the major manufacturers of Android devices. No specific details on the slate were unveiled for the time being, but the company did confirm that we'd see the device on shelves before the holiday season.
In the meantime, we should take a look at some of those Android-based mobile phones the company said it would release in 2010. Among them, we can count the just launched LG Optimus Chic and LG Optimus One handsets, both of which should become available for purchase in South Korea in the near future. No info on whether they would arrive in more markets emerged until now.
Both new smartphones are powered by the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, even if the two devices are not high end. The Optimus Chic is expected to appeal a lot to a younger audience, while the Optimus One should prove an entry level device. Additionally, the company reportedly announced that Android 2.2 should soon power another handset it brought to the market recently, namely the LG Optimus Z (aka SU950 / KU9500), though no specific date for the software's arrival was unveiled (via Engadget).
