In an unexpected move LG confirmed it would offer an Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the affordable L9 II smartphone. The information surfaced online via LG Italy and mentions two other smartphones that will receive the same update in the coming weeks.

The Optimus L9 II was officially announced back in August and made it to the market a few months later, in October 2013. The mid-range smartphone ships with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system out of the box, though Google announced KitKat around the same timeframe the Optimus L9 II was released on the market.

According to Italian blog site Androidani, LG will start seeding Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the Optimus L9 II “in the coming weeks.”

As mentioned earlier, the information has been confirmed by LG Italy officials, who also announced that the G2 would also receive an update in the coming weeks.

Next in line, LG G Pro Lite is expected to receive the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update during the second quarter of the year, while the Optimus G is slated for the same upgrade in the third quarter of 2014.

Keep in mind that these timeframes are only available for Italy, so the update might arrive in other countries slightly earlier or later.

These release dates for major updates usually vary by country and carrier, so specific details are only available closer to launch in every country where LG plans to launch these updates.

Here is LG Italy’s translated official statement regarding the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the smartphones mentioned earlier: “Good morning everyone! We respond to all questions in one comment. Updates operators for G2 and L9 II will arrive in the coming weeks.

Optimus G will receive KitKat in the third quarter of 2014. G Pro Lite at the end of the second quarter of 2014. For other models, at the moment, no official plans have been released.”

From LG’s official statement we understand that LG G2 will be the first to receive the KitKat update “in the coming weeks,” soon followed by the Optimus L9 II.

The other two Android smartphones will get the upgrade in the next couple of months, so we will be back with more news on the matter when new details emerge online.

Once again, keep in mind that these timeframes are just for Italy, but this is the first time LG confirms the Optimus L9 II is eligible for an Android 4.4.2 KitKat update.
