South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics is expected to show to the world an Android-based handset packing Intel’s Medfield SoC during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month. Apparently, this will be the first Android smartphone that will arrive on shelves with Intel’s mobile application processor inside.

Previous rumors also suggested that the company might launch such a device in 2012, but nothing was confirmed. This time, however, LG has confirmed the move.

"LG Electronics will produce Intel’s first Android smartphones that use Intel’s own mobile platform. The device will be shown at the CES," an LG top-ranking executive said, Korea Times reports.

While Intel does not have experience on the mobile market, the company is set to make a splash there, so as to become a worthy competitor for ARM and Nvidia.

``But one clear point is that Intel is spending heavily for more efficient mobile chips for phones and tablets,’’ said the executive.

LG already showcased an Intel-based device this year, but it seems that the performance levels the device was capable of delivering did not meet expectations.

However, the new device appears to pack all the necessary features to become a commercially available product.

"Intel’s chief executive Paul Otellini will release Intel’s first Android smartphone using our own platform at the CES,"Intel Korea chief Lee Hee-sung reportedly stated.

The handset will be unveiled in two weeks’ time at the Consumer Electronics Show set to kick off on January 9th, 2012 at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC).

One thing that remains to be seen is whether the device will actually hit shelves, or if any other LG smartphone packing the Intel SoC will be launched. Apparently, some other official from the company doubt that such a move will take place.

However, rumors on an Android tablet PC packing Intel’s Medfield chip expected to be launched next year also emerged, and we should wait for the said show to kick off to see whether they would pan out or not.
