Pioneer may have covered the segment for desktop optical disk drives when it launched the BDR-S07, but it is LG Electronics that made a portable BDXL writer.

Named BP40NS20, the item has arrived in Europe and, being an external product, is meant as a sort of companion to notebooks and such. It has a price of 109 Euro ($143).

The USB 2.0 interface establishes the connection to a PC, and LG even gave the drive 4MB of cache memory.

That said, BDXL disks of up to 128 GB can be written at 6X, while BD-RE disks go at 2X tops. Meanwhile, CDs and DVDs in various formats can be scribed at 6 to 24x.

As a bonus, LG threw in the LightScribe technology, which burns a label onto the back of the CD/DVD/BD.
