3D seems to have taken off and, even though there are still people who preach the impending, early death of the display technology, there is no disputing the fact that the effort to lead 3D to the mainstream has started off in force. In fact, some companies actually see such a promising future ahead of 3D that they are aiming to secure a large part of the market from the start. Since 3D TVs and monitors have only just started to sell well, LG hopes to secure a full fourth part of the entire market by the end of the year.

Basically, LG aims to sell 25% of all 3D TVs worldwide in 2010. This will give it a strong hold on the market, which will allow its profits to grow further in the following years, as more people transit to the new displays. The company will manufacture TV sets measuring between 42 inches and 150 inches, each of which will use both polarized and shutter type glasses, with the target sales amount being of about one million in 2010. In addition, LG intends to release a number of 3D-ready Blu-ray players and Full-HD 3D projectors.

"Our goal is boosting market share in 3D TVs and you can clearly see that, as our target for 3D market share is 10 percentage points above our LCD TV sales target," Havis Kwon, LG's vice president and head of the LCD, said.

"Shares have really been beaten down lately amid concerns about its smart phone performance, and on new worries that its strong television business may face a slowdown in the second half, after the World Cup," Kim Kap-ho, analyst at LIG Investment & Securities, stated. "But as its sector peers have rallied in recent weeks, LG Electronics shares at the current level offer attractive valuations."

LG also hopes to increase its total LCD TV share from 11% to 15% by the year's end.
