This is one of those revolutionary products that can make or break a market

Since the UHD resolution has already been explored more or less fully, there aren't many directions in which the display industry can go, which is why companies are getting really creative, as LG is proving.

At previous trade shows, LG revealed its plans for curved OLED television sets with a diagonal of at least 55 inches.

It even brought a few as a demonstration on some occasions, which is why market watchers have been so attentive.

They've basically been keeping their eyes and ears peeled for moments like this one, when the products would finally be up for sale.

That's right, even though there used to be a time when curved TVs were considered the object of science fiction, they are now reality.

LG's 55-inch curved OLED has been posted on Best Buy with a price of $14,999, which corresponds to €11,364.

Of course, knowing how rarely exchange rates are reflected in European vs. US pricing, it is more likely that, if LG ships the product in Europe, the price will be closer to €14,999.

Anyway, for now the TV is only selling through Best Buy's flagship Magnolia home theater store in Richfield, Minnesota.

Over the coming weeks, availability will extend to Francisco, Miami, Houston, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, as well as a few other cities.

Thus, LG will take even longer to reach the old continent and beyond. Hopefully, it will happen by fall, but it might not.

The 55-inch HDTV (no 4K 3840 x 2160 resolution here) has a thickness of only 4.3 mm and has actually been shipping in Korea since last month. It bears the part number 55EA9800. LG expects demand for OLED TV sets, curved or otherwise, to reach 7 million by 2016.

It won't cover them all though. Orders will go to other companies too, like Samsung, whose own 55-inch curved OLED HDTV will come out soon as well.
