Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced today that LG Electronics would use its TrueTouch touchscreen solution for its future KS360 mobile handset. The new flexible and programmable TrueTouch solution, based on the PSoC system-on-chip architecture, allows LG to select from a multitude of touchscreen materials and vendors for the design of its mobile device. At the same time, the company also announced that the new capacitive touchscreen is able to offer a next-generation user interface that would provide easy management of applications.

The fresh LG KS360 handset comes with a sliding QWERTY keypad and includes specialized messaging features offering users the possibility to send fast and easy SMS, IM and emails, while also allowing them to connect to social networking sites. The screen is able to rotate 90 degrees so that messaging is simplified, as it includes accelerometer technology. The handset also has a 2MP camera and a MicroSD card slot.

Cypress’ TrueTouch touchscreen allows OEMs to use a full portfolio of single-touch and multi-touch gestures, including tapping an application to open, panning through photo albums, scrolling down an e-mail, or rotating and pinching pictures. At the same time, Cypress enables the use of up to ten fingers for complex applications, like a virtual keyboard or gaming. Touchscreen designers will have this way the freedom to come up with new and creative interfaces for handsets, portable media players, GPS systems and other products.

“The compact size and sliding capability of the KS360 required a flexible touchscreen solution,” said Ji Hoon Jeong, Project Leader at LG. “Cypress’s TrueTouch touchscreen solution allowed us to work with the touchscreen and LCD vendors of our choice to get the exact look and feel we wanted.”

Dhwani Vyas, vice president of PSoC CapSense and Touchscreen Business Unit at Cypress, expressed the company's joy for working with LG on the development of the dynamic KS360 phone. “With increasing demand for a wide variety of touchscreens, we believe the flexibility of the Cypress TrueTouch solution is ideally positioned to enable the next generation of touchscreen products,” he shared.
