Alongside other important updates this week, Apple has posted a firmware update for its Late 2008 LED Cinema Display. Addressing an issue with the built-in iSight camera on the LED Cinema Display where the camera may not be recognized by some applications, the update is a meagre 654 KB in size, and needs to be applied on Intel systems running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) or 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard).

Affecting LED Cinema Display (24-inch, Late 2008), the LED Cinema Display iSight Firmware Update 1.0 is described as follows, on Apple’s Downloads area:

About LED Cinema Display iSight Firmware Update 1.0 This firmware update corrects an issue with the built-in iSight camera on the LED Cinema Display where the camera may not be recognized by applications.

To complete the firmware update process, please follow the instructions in the updater application (/Applications/Utilities/LED Cinema Display iSight Camera Firmware Update.app).

As usual, the Mac maker posts detailed information about the update on the Support section of its website, where tech note HT3957 provides a deeper look at the changes to occur after applying the update, as well as instructions on how to perform a proper installation. However, first of all, users need to determine if they actually need to install the update.

“Follow these steps to determine if the update has already been applied to your display,” Apple says.

- From the Apple menu, choose About this Mac. - Click More Info... - Open the hardware section and select USB. - Locate and select USB High Speed Bus. - Select Display iSight. - If this update has been installed, the version listed should be 2.31.
