Two LAPD detectives have been injured in a shooting outside the Wilshire Station in Mid-City, Los Angeles.

According to KABC, a gunman opened fire in front of the police substation on Tuesday, June 25 at 4:30 a.m.

LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith mentions that the detectives were working undercover and they were returning from a shift when they were shot.

They hadn't gotten out of their car yet, but they had used their key cards to access a restricted area when they were approached by an unidentified man on foot. He came up from behind them and shot at the vehicle, wounding both officers.

"This was a blatant attempt to assassinate two of the people that try to protect this community," Police Chief Charlie Beck tells KTLA.

"They were undercover officers working the burglary task force here out of the Wilshire station. They pulled up to the front of the gate and as they were opening the gate, from directly behind them, somebody for some reason opened fire on their car, striking it many times," Cmdr. Smith says, according to CBS News.

K-9 teams were dispatched to the scene. Officers are looking for an African-American man, aged 30 to 35 years old, in an all-black outfit, wearing a black hat.

"Anyone who is willing to do this and take on two armed police officers outside of a police station is obviously a very dangerous person. [...] We want to do everything we can to get this individual in custody so we can keep our community safe," Smith adds.

"We've supplemented the security at all our police stations in case this was something other than a random act against our officers," he notes.

The officers have suffered non-life threatening injuries – one of them incurred a shallow wound to the head and the other was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the hand.
