The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center is notifying 59,000 people that their personal and financial details might have been compromised by attackers who had access to the organization’s computer systems between September 17 and November 8.

Experts called in to investigate the incident said it was a sophisticated attack that targeted sensitive information.

The information the attackers might have gained access to includes names, contact information, payment card details, medical or health care information, dates of birth, social security numbers, and health insurance account numbers.

The attackers relied on a piece of malware to try to steal the information. The breach was identified by one of the organization’s employees.

Authorities have been called in to investigate the incident. In the meantime, impacted individuals are being offered one year of Experian’s ProtectMyID service for free.
