Since we’re on the topic, L5 Technology also has a remote product for you. However, unlike traditional remotes, the one provided by L5 is 100% customizable. How is that possible? Well, for starters, there's little solid material involved.

It’s mostly software! The folks at L5 decided to unclutter your coffee table of all those remotes and provide you with an application + IR transmitter that turn your iPhone or iPod touch into any of the remotes you own. As a universal remote solution, the L5 Remote offers quick and easy set-up using a drag and drop feature. This allows you to create your own ideal, personally customized remote control interface, and have just as many or just as few buttons as you like. Best of all, you can finally eliminate those controls you never touched in your life.

L5 Technology lists the following key features for its new product.

- Powerful enough to replace a coffee table full of remotes. - Drag and drop to design the remote you want. - Keep the buttons you use. Delete the ones you don’t. - Quick and easy setup. - Intuitive app for iPhone and iPod touch. - No batteries, no WiFi, no wall plug needed. - 100,000 button/1000 remote capacity.

“With the fast pace of innovation in the smartphone market, handhelds are becoming the consumer electronics platform of choice, causing disruptions across many markets. We see peripherals that connect smartphones to the physical world as key components in the revolution,” Wade McNary, CEO of L5 Technology, said. “Leveraging the power, versatility, and portability of handheld devices, and following Apple’s philosophy of design elegance and simplicity, we have solved a common problem. This one small device reverses a long trend toward complexity in remote controls.”

The L5 Remote is priced rather high at $49.95 (if you plan on using it with only one or two devices) while the software side of the solution will be provided for free through the iTunes App Store. The product is set to start selling tomorrow, after it’s introduced to those attending CES 2010 in Las Vegas. Interested parties will be able to purchase the L5 Remote directly from its makers’ website (www.L5remote.com), but also from various retailers.
