L.A. Noire is set to receive a very special sort of downloadable content, in the form of a batch of short stories based on characters found within the upcoming game or in its world, which will be released as ebooks through major retailers.
L.A. Noire is set to be released in two weeks, so Rockstar, its publisher, and Team Bondi, its developer, are trying to promote it through various ways.
We've already seen the
pre-order bonuses, which will be released after the game's launch as regular DLC, but now, the two companies have revealed a new sort of tie-in merchandise.
Rockstar has partnered with Mulholland Books, and is set to publish a series of short stories, some of which being based on
characters and cases found in L.A. Noire.
The books will explore "the lives of actresses desperate for the Hollywood spotlight; heroes turned defeated men; and classic Noir villains," while "readers will come across not only familiar faces, but familiar cases from the game that take on a new spin to tell the tales of emotionally torn protagonists, depraved schemers and their ill-fated victims," according to the company.
The books are set to be penned by famous writers like Megan Abbott, Lawrence Block, Joe Lansdale, Joyce Carol Oates, Francine Prose, Jonathan Santlofer, Duane Swierczynski and Andrew Vachss.
"L.A. Noire draws on a rich history of not just film, but also great crime literature for inspiration," said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games. "Using the game's world as a springboard, we worked with the genre's best writers to create stories that lived up to the finest traditions of crime fiction."
The books are going to be made available on June 6, through "all major ebook retailers," but pricing details have yet to be revealed.
If you want a taste of this new tie-in, you can read an excerpt from "The Girl" by Megan Abbott on the
L.A. Noire website right now.
The actual game will be released on May 17 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
