Sprint has just confirmed that the Kyocera Echo dual-screen Android smartphone will receive Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread software update starting August 1.

The information was published by the carrier inside its Sprint Playbook, which makes it official and painful at the same time for all those Epic 4G owners out there who are still waiting for their Gingerbread upgrade.

It looks like the update will be pushed OTA (over the air) to existing customers over a 4-day period, which means that the deployment process should end on August 5.

Although the Echo is not the most popular Android smartphone available on the North American market, it seems that the handset manufacturer wants to impress its fans and decided to push the Gingerbread update as soon as possible.

The move is meant to increase the Echo's sales and a direct slap to Samsung, which seems to neglect Sprint Epic 4G users.

In addition to the Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread operating system, the 2.002SP major software update for Kyocera Echo will bring the following enhancements and fixes:

- ECO mode; - EAS enhancements; - Swype 3.0; - Miscellaneous security patches; - Improved powered management; - Improved text input; - Minor performance improvements; - Manage Applications Control; - Download Manager. To update the Kyocera Echo over-the-air, simply go to Settings / System Updates and tap Update firmware.

The phone will automatically download and install any available updates. Users may manually reboot the phone after the installation process is complete, in case it doesn't restart automatically.

To check if the update was installed successfully simply go to Settings / About phone and then tap Software Version to display the current firmware version, which should be 2.002SP.

Stay tuned for more information on the matter as we receive word about the release of Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread for Kyocera Echo.
