Roland Garros is very close to reveal its four aces in the women's competition. And the first one was decided today, when Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova beat her compatriot Dinara Safina in straight sets (7-6, 6-0), to clinch a well-deserved semifinal in the French tournament. But it wasn't as easy as it looks.
Safin's younger sister started off strong, taking an enormous lead in the opener, 5-1. After that, it was the same thing that happened to her past opponent in the 4th round, Maria Sharapova. From 5-1 up, she surprisingly lost the set, after Kuznetsova rallied back in the tie-break. It was basically all there was to the game, since the second saw a disoriented Safina, still unable to recover from her first set failure. The game ended 7-6, 6-0 for the experienced Russian contender, who booked the first place in the French Open semis.
Still, the Czech's sensation in this year tournament, Nicole Vaidisova, managed to rise up to the momentum and produced another stunning performance. After crashing out Amelie Mauresmo in the 4th round, the 17-year old Czech sent Venus Williams packing. She rallied through the second and the third set (6-1, 6-3), after losing the opener at tie-break (7-6). The victory takes her to the first Grand Slam semifinal of her career, where she'll meet 8th seeded Russian, Svetlana Kuznetsova.
In the most expected matches of all, Kim Clijsters managed to keep her cool and beat Martina Hingis. Although she was coming after great performances on clay so far, the Swiss player couldn't trouble the Belgian more than a set. The first one went into tie-break, where Clijsters proved stronger, taking it with 7-5. The second set was all about the number 2 seeded, while Martina had to settle for another failed experience in Paris. Kim, who will most likely take over as world number one by the end of the tournament, will take on either Justine Henin-Hardenne, or Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the semis. Henin is currently leading her opponent on the Lenglen Arena 7-5, 2-0.
