The late frontman for the grunge band Nirvana is being celebrated in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. Local authorities have announced that henceforth, February 20 is going to be known to locals as “Kurt Cobain Day,” in what is to become an annual thing.

Rolling Stone reports that the decision was taken by Mayor Bill Simpson along with the city council, in order to honor one of the city's more notable citizens.

An official press release states, “Aberdeen residents may justifiably take pride in the role our community played in the life of Kurt Cobain and the international recognition our community has gained from its connections with Kurt Cobain and his artistic achievements.”

At this point, the entire event is still being drawn up and there are speculations from Mayor Simpson that the memorial could be turned into a week-long event.

This isn't the first sign of respect Aberdeen has paid to the legendary rocker. Previously, they had a “Welcome to ...” sign which lists Cobain as a resident of the city and gives the title of one of his most famous tracks, “Come As You Are.”

Nirvana is also billed to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year on April 10, along with other big names such as Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates and Cat Stevens.

One of the surviving members, drummer Dave Grohl is set to play the ending act at this year's Grammy Awards together with the Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age.

Dave thanked the fans when the announcement about the Hall of Fame induction was made, “I'd like to thank the committee not only for this induction, but also for recognizing Nirvana for what we were: pure rock & roll. Most of all, thank you to all of the fans that have supported rock & roll throughout the years, and to Kurt and Krist [Noveselic], without whom I would not be here today.”
