Kunos Simulazioni, a company which handles both development and publishing duties for its games, has announced that it is working on a new racing simulation called Assetto Corsa, which will be offered exclusively on the PC via digital distribution in 2012.

The name Assetto Corsa can be translated as “race prepared” and has been chosen by the development team because it shows off the passion that they plan to make the core aspect of the upcoming game.

In order to deliver a realistic experience the developers at Kunos Simulazioni have used a new laser scanning technology in order to map all the details of the racing tracks that will be included in the game.

The team will use the data to build the racing courses and will also built a model for car behavior that realistically reproduces the way high performance cars perform when pushed to their limits.

The developers stated, “The concept for "Assetto Corsa" was born in 2008, and developed in parallel with the team's more public projects. The new technology was never intended to be an evolution of the netKar PRO line, but more like a completely new approach to simulation software, based on the lessons learned in ten years of activity in this field.”

Assetto Corsa will include cars ranging from road vehicles and GT cars to a number of modern and classical single seaters and to LMP prototypes.

The developers say that the game will get an initial 1.0 release, which includes several tracks and vehicles, and that more content will be included as part of follow-up content launches.

Assetto Corsa will use a new graphics engine called AC Engine, which is created in house, and is based on DirectX 11.

The game will support user created mods and cars and it will be interesting to see whether a new game can succeed in racing space dominated by the Need for Speed, Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport.
