Actress does Elle interview on fame and constant media attention

Kristen Stewart never smiles in paparazzi photos and does very rarely so in magazine spreads. The latter might not be a choice for her because she could be instructed to keep a straight face by the photographer, but for the former she has a perfectly sound explanation.

No, it has nothing to do with how much she hates the paparazzi and / or the tabloid media that run her photos, though it’s a well-known fact that she hates them both with a passion.

She’s just accepted that she can’t possibly please people all the time.

“Now I feel like if I smiled for a paparazzi photo – not that I ever would – that’s exactly what people would be desecrating me for. They’d be like, ‘now you’re going to give it up, now you’re a sellout.’ like, okay. What do you want? What would you like?” Kristen tells the latest issue of Elle magazine, which also comes with a gorgeous spread in which, you guessed it, she doesn’t smile.

While we doubt she’s using “desecrate” correctly in this context, we get what she’s saying: if she smiled for paparazzi photos, she’d look like she was enjoying all this extra attention, which she clearly doesn’t. She never did, mostly because she never imagined she would be more than an actress, this huge celebrity.

On the same note, Kristen never planned her career in any specific way so, yes, she was surprised when she saw her profile shoot to the stars with her role as Bella Swan on “The Twilight Saga.”

“Never at any point have I sat down and plotted how I should proceed from here on. As soon as you start thinking about your career as a trajectory – like, as if you’re going to miss out on some wave or momentum – then you’re never doing anything for yourself anyway. Then you’re truly, actually, specifically working for the public. You’re turning yourself into a bag of chips,” Kristen explains.

Before “Twilight” became the biggest tween phenomenon of recent years, Kristen had been working steadily as an actress for years. All changed for her when the first “Twilight” movie became an international success, and to this day, 2 years after the franchise ended, she is still getting attention for that role.

She’s been keeping very busy in the meantime, mostly in indie productions, but she’s also branched out in fashion, thanks to very successful (and most definitely lucrative) deals with Balenciaga and Chanel.

Kristen has no less than 4 movies opening this year (“Camp X-Ray,” “Clouds of Sils Maria,” “Still Alice,” and “Anesthesia”) and 2 scheduled for 2015 (“American Ultra” and “Equals”). She’s determined to part with her Bella on-screen persona for good and, obviously, coming out with as many movies as possible, with as diverse roles as possible, is the perfect way to do that.

It’s doubtful, though, that anyone would accuse her of being a sellout for smiling in photos.
