Lizards hint at possible cyber-attack on the website

The website of security blogger Brian Krebs is currently under duress as it offers intermittent access to its content, and the main suspect at the moment is Lizard Stresser, a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) tool provided by hacker group Lizard Squad to anyone looking to disrupt the online activity of any target.

The blogger and Lizard Squad are known to be in a feud with one another. Krebs published several articles regarding the activity of the group, including their latest deeds, such as bringing down the PlayStation and Xbox gaming networks on Christmas day.

The two parties huffed at each other on Twitter

He often taunted the members of the group, especially on Twitter, calling them skids, short for “script kiddies,” unskilled individuals that rely on ready-made scripts to carry out their hacking deeds. “Band of young hooligans” was also a term used to describe the hackers in his posts.

Lizard Squad did not sit idly either, as it posted numerous derisive remarks at the security blogger. The main topic is Krebs’ hairline; and the posts intensified on the last day of 2014.

On December 31, 2014, Krebs posted that Lizard Stresser was down, but the tool is currently up and running, and the Lizards have just tweeted that their tool is targeting KrebsOnSecurity at the moment.

In several short messages, they announced that the website was down, and also hinted that they were trying to break its security. The tweets have been deleted a short while after they were posted by the the account owner, but we managed to capture some of them.

It is unclear what plan the attackers chose, although there is a great chance that Lizard Squad members themselves are behind it, but at the moment KrebsOnSecurity is experiencing difficulties in displaying its content to visitors, as the website seems to become accessible only for short periods of time.

Previous attacks were a marketing strategy for Lizard Stresser

Lizard Stresser DDoS tool was launched by Lizard Squad at the end of December and it can be rented by anyone to carry out disruption attacks on an online target, for a specific period of time.

The hackers used the previous attacks as a marketing ploy to attract customers and to prove the capability of their tool.

For a monthly fee of $5.99 / €5, individuals can use it for a 100-second attack, and the duration of the assault can increase to three, eight or 25 minutes, if more money is paid. The maximum duration of an attack is eight and a half hours.
