The Korora Project had the pleasure of announcing the general availability of the MATE edition of the Korora 21 Linux distribution, based on the popular Fedora 21 operating system.

Highlights of Korora MATE 21 include an up-to-date MATE desktop environment borrowed from the upstream Fedora 21 software repositories, a highly customized desktop layout that looks gorgeous, as well as a new set of default apps.

"Due to popular demand we decided to bring back the Korora MATE edition, which took us a few months to get it where we wanted it," was stated in the announcement. "The desktop layout has been customized to resemble the look of our Xfce and GNOME editions."

The MATE edition of Korora Linux is built around the traditional MATE 1.8.2, but its new desktop layout might fool you at first sight, since it uses a custom Start Menu (MintMenu), a hidden dock (Plank) with the Kororafied planktheme on the left side of the screen, as well as the beautiful Korora icon theme.

Korora MATE 21 includes a new set of default apps

Those of you who used Korora MATE before will notice that the new version includes a new set of default applications, among which we can mention the Mozilla Thunderbird as the default email and news client, Asunder as the default Audio-CD ripper, Transmission as the default BitTorrent client, and Audacious as the default music player.

Of course, this means that Mozilla Thunderbird replaced Claws Mail, Audacious replaced Rhythmbox, Asunder replaced Sound Juicer, and Transmission took the place of Deluge. The rest of the packages have been updated to their latest version available at the moment of the release.

Korora MATE comes with simplified desktop effects powered by Compiz, which is enabled by default. Download Korora MATE 21 right now from Softpedia, where you can also find other Korora editions, with the GNOME, KDE, Cinnamon, and Xfce desktop environments.
