Korg Radias tested

You all have heard of and enjoyed at least one of the hits of Robert Miles, Antiloop, Prodigy, Faithless and so many more. I can't tell exactly what made you like their songs and music, whether it was the rhythm, the melody, lyrics or the good-looking frontman/frontwoman. One thing is sure: their music is digital and for these sounds digital gear is used.

Now, technology evolves and so does gear; yet some things remain unaltered. A sine wave will always be a sine wave while harmonics will never cease to be harmonics and no matter how far will technology go in this direction, it won't ever change this status quo.

The good thing about technology is that the more it advances, the more performance we can get from the audio gear, be that gear a huge synth or a simple integrated circuit. And when it comes to synthesizers and vocoders, better technology reads better operation, more power to the sound engines and obviously more options to choose from.

It's the case of Korg's new release, the Radias synthesizer: based on a strong MMT engine and sporting now 24 voice-synthesis, the new tool is by birth one of the most complex and complete choices a digital musician could make. Not only has the design been improved but technical "insides" were upgraded to new, bold and daring frontiers. From wave modulation and sequencing to formant-motion vocoding and superior algorithms, Radias sets foot on a journey towards territories yet undiscovered.

Radias embeds 2 oscillators (synth sounds and drums,13 basic waveforms and 4 modulations) and a noise-generator, multiple configurable routing solutions, 2 filters (one with new comb shaping) and so much more you can use. Korg's vocoder for Radias will allow you to record 16 7.5 seconds formant data sets so it is just great for live and live improvisation events, if you feel like.

The bottom line is that Korg's new gear sounds very cool right out of the box, even before you start meddling with its setting or spend long nights looking for the suitable sound for one dream-program you want to build. You can convince yourselves about Radias' powers by watching this video.

There is no need to write down all the Radias can do as it would require a lot of space to fill in with the truly numerous specs and that would not be nice. Nevertheless, you can check the manufacturer's website and get the full list if needed, as well as extended info on each feature.
