Konami's Kazumi Kitaue: A Cheaper PS3 Isn't Enough

Thus, they're throwing MGS 4 at other platforms as well

Just as Sony have announced their dropping the price on the 60GB and 80GB PS3 by $100, new strategies were in order, as a mere drop in price can't assure success in the long run. The PS3 desperately needs some good next-gen titles and apparently, no developer/publisher is keen on aiding the electronics giant. For example, Konami. Kazumi Kitaue considers that a price drop won't ensure explosive sales, thus announces to go
multiplatform with MGS 4.

Here's what Reuters reports, as I found today via Slashdot: "Kitaue said Konami may need to expand the target hardware for its blockbuster fighting game Metal Gear Solid, which has so far been developed for Sony's PlayStation machines, to other consoles in the future to recoup development costs ... The release of the latest version of Metal Gear Solid series is expected to help lure hard-core gamers to the PS3 and alleviate concerns over scarcity of strong PS3 titles. Underscoring sluggish PS3 sales and robust demand for the Wii, Nintendo shot past Sony in market value last month and bumped the Tokyo-based electronics conglomerate off the list of Japan's 10 most valuable companies."

Metal Gear Solid is a stealth-based series of games directed by Hideo Kojima. The original MGS was developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan and was first published by Konami in 1998 for the PlayStation One. It was well-received publicly and critically, shipping more than six million copies and scoring an average of 94% in the review tallying website Metacritic's aggregate. It is the third title to be released in the Metal Gear series and a direct sequel to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

Of course, Sony knew that a price cut was not going to be enough to get the system moving, but I'm not so sure they've hurried with this announcement, not having anything else prepared. The E3 is well known for surprising even the fiercest of analysts, so undoubtedly, the company will date a few of those 380 titles they've announced for the PS3.
