Raiden is a character that changes how the game plays

Metal Gear Solid: Rising will be the most action oriented game launched in the long running Konami series and the leading developer working on it believes that this represents both an opportunity and a risk for the franchise.

Hideo Kojima, who is the man behind the success of Metal Gear Solid, has told the Official PlayStation Magazine in the United Kingdom that, “If somebody thinks 'I love Snake' and just really wants traditional stealth gameplay and that experience, then it may be hard to get into Rising, but for people who are more open and willing to try new things, it shouldn't be a problem.”

He added, “Raiden in MGS 4 was received very well, and I wanted to keep going with that direction in Rising. The people who liked him in 4 will like him in this, but it's a personal preference.”

Kojima went on to talk about why Raiden was chosen as the main character in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, saying that the new recruit was necessary because the player had to learn, alongside him, the rules that governed the game world.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising is not being directly supervised by Hideo Kojima himself but the developer says that he is keeping a close eye on what they are creating even though he does not concern himself with every small detail, like the exact narrative pacing.

Kojima say that despite this the team has clear boundaries that it cannot cross and that he is ready to step in to correct anything he sees as being a major problem.

At the moment we don’t know much about Rising other than Raiden will make use of a sword and much of the game will be based around the cut and take mechanic, taking out enemies and using parts in order to enhance his own effectiveness.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising should be out on the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the PC during next year.
