The character was risky when it was first introduced

Traditionally, video game developers tend to avoid making judgment calls about the characters they have created, but Hideo Kojima, the leader of the development team working on Metal Gear Solid V, says that he is a fan of Otacon and what he represents.

The official Xbox site quotes the developer as saying that, “He's a character who proudly identifies himself as an ‘Otaku’ (Japanese for ‘geek’), but is still able to survive and hold his own in the midst of all these amazing heroic characters, despite the fact that he himself never engages in battle.”

Kojima says that when the first games were created, it was risky to include such a character in an action game and that he is happy that the Metal Gear Solid community has grown attached to him.

Ground Zeroes, the first of two new Metal Gear Solid games, has a launch date of March 18, 2014, on current-gen consoles, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.
