Kofi Annan Cancels Visit to Iran

Kofi Annan announced yesterday that he canceled his visit to Iran because of the remarks made by the country's president.

Although the UN Secretary General had scheduled a visit to this country for mid November, the organization has decided that this was not a good time.

"The secretary-general
and the Iranian government have mutually agreed that this is not an appropriate time for him to travel to Iran", U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad shocked the entire world by saying that Israel should be "wiped off the map", during a Teheran conference called "The world without Zionism".

Shortly after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's comments, Kofi Annan and officials from other countries have expressed their disapproval and surprise at hearing the shocking statement.

Following the president's statements and the recalling of 40 ambassadors, political analysts warn of a possible isolation of Iran from the rest of the states.
