Kodi, a media player and entertainment hub that used to go by the name XBMC up until a few months ago, has been updated once more and is now available for download. This is the second Beta in the new branch, and it comes with some pretty important new features.

The development team is preparing some big changes for Kodi, and it looks like the 15.0 branch of the media hub promises to be a huge release, which is especially interesting since the 14.0 version was also a big step forward. Despite the fact that it's already a premium experience, the developers still find things to implement and improve.

Still, don't get excited too early since this is just a Beta update, and it will take a while until it reaches stable status. Even so, users can get a glimpse of what's coming, or they can take the risk and install this release. It's not advisable on productions machines, but that's probably valid for any kind of software that's not stable.

Kodi 15.0 Beta 2 is here

"A little later than originally planned though, which we'll explain later. Although we said that Kodi 15.0 a “clean-up” edition, we still managed to squeeze in a couple of really nice features. In total, we had ~170 code change requests that were included since last beta release. All this sums up in a pretty big list of improvements and clean-up," said the developers.

According to the changelog, 4K playback is already available for the Android platform, the adaptive seeking functions have been improved, libCEC 3.3.0 has been added, the queuing of music videos has been fixed, the audio decoder and PVR add-ons are now disabled by default, the progress for add-on repository update is now displayed, the databases have been cleaned up, season and episode labels have been added to the PVR section, and subtitles have been corrected.
