Customers in the Philippines looking to bring an eReader into the family should know Smart Communications have a very sweet deal waiting for them.

Starting this week, the Kobo Touch eReader will be given free of charge to those looking to sign on with a new data plan under the Smart Communication umbrella.

Consumers can take advantage of the offer by selecting Plan 499, which will provide them with a Kobo Touch eReader bundled with 30 Internet hours per month via Smart Bro Pocket WiFi, capable of delivering up to 7.2Mbps of download speeds.

So basically you’ll be getting e free eReader just for signing up to get Internet access. That’s a pretty attractive offer.

Kobo has an online store set up in the Philippines since 2013, but customers are able to grab Kobo’s devices from bookstores across the country.

But is Kobo getting desperate enough to offer free of charge devices in the country? By the looks of it, Kobo’s popularity is not sky rocketing in the Philippines, so the company is trying to draw attention to itself using any means necessary.

The Kobo eReader comes with a 6-inch E-Ink XGA Pearl screen with an 800 x 600 resolution and draws power from a Freescale 508 processor fitted with 2GB of internal storage (expandable to 32GB via microSD card).
