The battle of the eReaders continues and this time Kobo has also entered into the fight with a cheaper $99 (€74) model of the Kobo Touch that is basically the same as its older brother, but comes with a new ads service that kicks in each time you put the device to sleep.

The Kobo Touch with Offers sports a 6-inch screen that is built using the Pearl E Ink technology and can display up to 16 shades of gray.

This is powered by a Freescale i.MX508 processor, that Kobo says it turn pages in just a few fractions of a second, and just like the previous version, the reader features WiFi connectivity and an SD card slot.

This can be used to expand the 1000 books built-in memory of the reader, and is placed at the bottom of the chassis for easy access.

"eReaders are this season's hottest holiday gift giving category and the introduction of Kobo Touch with Offers makes giving the gift of eReading easier than ever," said Michael Serbinis, CEO of Kobo.

"Kobo is the perfect gift to give with a selection of cost-effective readers, over 2.5 million eBooks, as well as the most popular newspapers and magazines. There is truly something for everyone," continued the company’s rep.

The $99 Kobo Touch with offers is available right now from US retailers including Best Buy, Target, Fry's, Kmart and Sears, or you can also order yours online from the company’s website.

If ads are not really your thing and you also want to save some money in the process, you could also check out the limited edition $79 (€59) Nook Simple Touch that Barnes & Noble has introduced just yesterday, provided that you can find one of course.
