Owners of Android devices who would like to learn more on the data needs of various applications available for them can now head over to the Know My App website for that.

The site was designed to deliver info on data-hungry applications and provides a list of popular software that could eat more data than  users would like them to.

The portal allows interested parties to search apps by name and also informs them on how concerned they should be when using the most popular mobile apps, based on the amount of data they eat.

The website was designed by the CTIA-The Wireless Association in collaboration with the app developer community. It is intended for both Android and iOS users out there.

“With Intertek Testing Services North America, we offer data usage estimates on some of the most popular apps in the Apple and Google stores,” the website notes.

On Know My App, users will also find a series of tips on how to lower the data usage on their devices, such as switching to Wi-Fi networks, adjusting settings to minimize updates, or uninstalling apps that are not being used.

“An app is mobile software that adds a function or feature to a wireless device; popular apps include games, social networks, maps, and music/video sharing,” the website explains.

“Whether you have an unlimited plan or a monthly allotment, it's important to understand how apps use data before you purchase or download them since your wireless experience – from the app, data usage, battery life and network speeds – will be impacted.”

Know My App was designed to serve as a benchmark for measuring the data needs of applications, as well as their efficiency. It provides both consumers and developers with information that should help them better understand the manner in which mobile applications use data.
