Untangle Gateway Platform 10, a Linux-based network gateway with pluggable modules for network applications like spam blocking, web filtering, anti-virus, anti-spyware, intrusion prevention, VPN, SSL VPN, and firewall, is now available for download.
The Untangle gateway is a very good solution that is capable of keeping computer networks safe and speedy. This software is all about managing the network and the network traffic.
The mantra of the current release has been inspired by recent events: “Know More about Your Network Traffic than the NSA.” Untangle is able to examine encrypted traffic over SSL, protect against intrusions, malware, spyware and attacks, filter web sites and control apps, and enable remote access and site-to-site VPN.
The biggest change in Untangle 10 is the introduction of a new app called HTTPS Inspector, which should be very helpful for the heavy users of the platform.
“Untangle HTTPS Inspector allows for full decryption of HTTPS so that applications like Web Filter, Application Control and Virus Blocker can scan the traffic and apply their rules to it.”
“This enables organizations to ensure that the same level of control that Untangle exerted on non-encrypted HTTP traffic can also be in place with encrypted HTTPS traffic,” reads the official announcement.
Besides the new HTTPS Inspector, a new networking implementation has been put in place, replacing the old one.
“The new networking layer has a new UI and improved & reorganized functionality as well as a simpler backend implementation. The factory defaults now have all interfaces aside from 'External' and 'Internal' disabled by default. The third interface is no longer called 'DMZ',” the announcement also reads.
Other changes include better IPv6 configurability, 802.1q tagged alias support, DHCP configuration per interface, better PPPoE support, systemDev, and a new Linux kernel, 2.6.32. The distribution is also based on Debian 6.0.
