Knoppix 6.7.1 has been released. The latest version of the popular live CD/DVD Linux distro that started it all, comes with a lot of bleeding-edge software, along with all of the things you've grown accustomed to.

The latest release comes with updated packages from its Debian upstream, picked from the testing and unstable repositories. It brings the latest Linux kernel, modern browser options and the latest LibreOffice 3.4.3.

"Version 6.7.1 has been updated from Debian/squeeze with the usual picks from Debian 'testing' and 'unstable', and uses Kernel 3.0.4 and xorg 7.6 (core 1.11) for supporting currentmost computer hardware," the official announcement read.

Knoppix 6.7.1 adds support for the experimental Noveau graphic card drivers for Nvidia hardware, which offers accelerated 3D graphics via kernel mode-setting.

The latest release also comes with a new 64-bit kernel option. Using the "knoppix64" boot option, Knoppix 6.7.1 uses a 64-bit kernel, offering support for machines with large amounts of memory. The 64-bit kernel is only included in the DVD version of Knoppix 6.7.1.

There is now the option of booting from an ISO directly, bypassing the need to burn a CD or DVD, as long as you can get to the boot screen.

Knoppix 6.7.1 also comes with a number of popular packages, usually very recent versions. LibreOffice 3.4.3 is included as an office suite. Users get a choice between Chromium 13.0.782.220, a recent stable version, but only with the DVD version, and Firefox 6.0.2.

Knoppix is the Linux distro that pioneered live environments, something that most modern distros offer by default now. The latest versions come with a fast boot system, ensuring that everything is up in no time. Knoppix uses the lightweight LXDE environment.
