As the customer demand for products that provide very high storage capacities in quite a small form factor has seriously increased over the past few years, more and more memory makers come up with new and advanced solutions meant to satisfy that demand. And one of the latest such companies is Kingston, who has just announced the release of 3 miniSDHC memory cards, each of them providing a 4GB storage capacity but different data transfer
speeds.
Each speed class designation reflects the minimum sustained data transfer rate (DTR) of megabytes per second (MB/s). Thus, a Class 2 SDHC card has a minimum DTR of 2 MB/sec, a Class 4 SDHC has a minimum DTR of 4 MB/sec, while a Class 6 SDHC card has a minimum DTR of 6 MB/sec. However, even if they might share the same physical size and appearance, the miniSDHC is compatible with miniSDHC host devices only and not backward-compatible with standard miniSD-enabled devices or readers.
Quite obviously, the cards are very small, measuring around 21.5mm x 20.0mm x 1.4mm. However, they do provide quite a high level of versatility, as they can be used as full-size SDHC card when combined with included SD adapter, are compliant with the SD Card Association specifications, Version 2.00 and provide quite a wide operating temperature range, of -25°C to 85°C.
"As sleeker, more sophisticated mobile phones, PDAs and MP3 players offer digital imaging, music, video, mobile TV and games, the need for higher data transfer rates, increased storage and smaller form factor expansion memory becomes greater," said Jean Wong, Flash memory product manager, Kingston. "Kingston is ready with miniSDHC memory to support the popular but storage-hungry advanced features of these next generation digital devices," continued Wong.
The new Kingston miniSDHC cards will retail for around $62.00 (the Class 2 version), $64.00 (the Class 4 version) and $66.00 (the Class 6 version). Well, the difference of 1 dollar per MB/s ain't too shabby, is it now?
