Kingston Technology have announced that they are planning to expand their laptop memory line with 2GB memory modules. The SO-DIMMs are available
in two speed ranges, one using 533 MHz DDR2 and CL 4/5 timings and the other with the same timings but this time with a working frequency of 667MHz DDR2. With this move, Kingston hopes to meet the requirements of users who plan on using the following Windows Vista release, as the new Windows needs more memory than the XP does. Taking that into account, it's easy to realize that a 2GB system running Windows Vista will be an ordinary thing in a year or so, eventually leading to an increase in large capacity memory modules sales, but also putting a lot of strain on manufacturers' capabilities.
As ever, fast laptop memory kits don't come cheap, the memory line using 533 MHz will be priced at $590 while the faster 667 MHz one will have a price of $640 per module. Kingston also sells 800MHz DDR2 modules but only in 512MB and 1GB flavor, generally priced at $110, respectively $210 for the 1GB module. For all of you laptop users in need of additional RAM, price drops are expected during Christmas holydays.
