This is the second generation of its secure USB stick line

Kingston's DataTraveler Locker+ line of flash drives is getting rather old and the company decided it was a good time to refresh it, so it brought out the DataTraveler Locker+ G2.

The DataTraveler Locker was released back in 2009, and the initial reaction was somewhat mixed. Since it was still a bit early in the game, some people were not convinced there were any advantages in hardware-based encryption, over software-based ones.

The following couple of years got people to warm up to the notion though, and the DataTraveler Locker+ doubtlessly experienced at least a mild level of success.

If Locker+ didn't possess some brand strength, Kingston would see no point in launching a second generation. It would drop the idea or make a totally new collection from scratch.

Kingston's USB 3.0/2.0 DataTraveler Locker G2+ comes in 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB capacities.

All of them have hardware-based encryption (AES 256-bit most likely), transfer speeds of 10 MB/s when reading, a performance of 5 MB/s when writing and a size of 2.28 x 0.73 x 0.38 inches (58.00 x 18.6 x 9.75 mm).

There is no need for special drivers, not to ensure Windows and Mac OS X compatibility (works interchangeably from the start) and not for the data protection, either.

Furthermore, the flash drives can store up to 20 account passwords and will lock down and initiate full formatting after 10 failed login attempts.

"Data security for consumers is simple and affordable with the new DataTraveler Locker+ G2. The data encryption makes this the perfect USB drive to keep your information safe and out of strangers’ hands in case it ever gets lost," said Andrew Ewing, Flash memory business manager, Kingston.

"Users can take their data between Mac and PC systems with ease, and also safely store login information to websites with the included password manager.”

The 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB DataTraveler Locker+ G2 flash drives have prices of $18 (€14.68), $21 (€17.3), $37 (€30.18) and $82 (€66.88), respectively.
