The state of Rhode Island will auction off the Kingdoms of Amalur intellectual property this month, including the Project Copernicus MMO, in order to recover some of the money it lost when aiding developers 38 Studios and Big Huge Games.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was one of the big RPGs that appeared last year but, even if it performed quite well, it didn't make enough money to keep developers 38 Studios and Big Huge Games from going bankrupt.

In order to recover the $90 million (€67 million) it invested in the studio, the state of Rhode Island seized all remaining assets and is set to organize an auction for them later this month, according to Joystiq.

Both the Kingdoms of Amalur IP and the Project Copernicus MMO will be sold to the highest bidders, so it's going to be interesting to see just what will happen with the two intellectual properties.
