The team still has plenty of more stories to explore

The development team at Square Enix working on Kingdom Hearts 3 confirms that the coming game is designed to put an end to the current storyline of the series but, at the same time, hints that there are more narratives to explore in future titles.

Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of the concept and the franchise, is quoted by Polygon as saying that he never had a clear plan about how many Kingdom Hearts games would be launched.

He says, “In Kingdom Hearts 3, the battles that the characters have been fighting for the past ten years will come to a conclusion. That is the plan. But the series will continue. Only the particular enemy they have been fighting the past ten years will come to an end.”

The team has already explained that Sora will be the main character of the game once again and that the cast will also include familiar faces like Riku, King Mickey Donald Duck, Goofy and more Disney regulars.

At the same time, the team is unwilling to say whether all the stories of the universe will be wrapped up or if some sort of connection to future games will be maintained in order to keep the extensive fan base interested.

Nomura has also explained how Disney is dealing with the innovative ways that Square Enix is finding to use its most popular cartoons.

The developer adds, “What world is available for the title is an important question. The counterpart that I’ve been working with at Disney the past ten years is the same person. We have very heated discussions about this franchise, and we’ve done that for the past ten years, but we have a steady relationship.”

Kingdom Hearts 3 will be out on the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft and will probably be launched in 2014.
