Czech developer Warhorse Studios has announced that the playable alpha version of the realistic medieval role-playing game Kingdom Come: Deliverance will become available on October 22.

The first edition that will enable gamers to visit medieval locales inspired by real-life places in Europe and history will not, however, include the full package.

"Realistic single-player RPG set in the medieval Europe. Open-world sandbox with period accurate melee combat. Dungeons & no Dragons," the developers described their project in their Kickstarter pitch, offering players an apparently pedestrian experience, but one that apparently many people wanted all along.

What the alpha offers

The experience will be limited, as it is meant to get some very early feedback on the state of the game and its features, as well as on the way it runs on a wide assortment of systems. Players will be able to explore one of the towns and a couple of quests, as the test is meant to showcase a tiny morsel of the game.

The alpha version of Kingdom Come: Deliverance won't contain any sort of combat, and it won't feature horse riding. All you'll get is a small village to explore, a few mini-quests, and a few NPCs going around their business.

Developer Warhorse Studios plans to slowly add in more features to the game over the course of the coming months, and the alpha is meant to see if the game runs on people's computers and to find any major issues in an early stage of development.

The alpha game build will be distributed via Steam and will only be accessible to backers of the game. If you happen to be one, you'll be emailed and asked whether you want to join in or not.

In case you're one of the people who want the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 edition of the game, fear not. The PC-only alpha will still be available to you, and you'll still get the console version of the final build.

What else is new

The news comes from the studio's eighth video update, also delivering an update on the funding level reached by the ongoing campaign on the Kingdom Come: Deliverance website, and showing some behind-the-scenes footage, offering a look at the team's motion capture and animation technology.

The video update also shows some new assets, such as bears and cow models and vegetation. In addition to this, the update ends with some combat footage from an internal testing build, showing how the realistic melee system works, complete with parrying and a bit of ranged combat.
