Team Simplex from „Babeş-Bolyai” University in Cluj-Napoca will represent Romania at the Imagine Cup 2011 Worldwide Finals in New York City this summer. The winning project of the Imagine Cup 2011 Romania finals is focused on leveraging Microsoft’s natural user interface (NUI) Kinect sensor for patient rehabilitation scenarios through kinesiotherapy.

Dubbed MIRA (Medical Interactive Recovery Assistant), the solution was developed by Alina Călin, Andrei Cantea, Andrei Dascălu, Cosmin Mihaiu, mentored by Dr. Dan Suciu.

“Imagine Cup fosters creativity and entrepreneurship contributing to tackling and resolving some of the most difficult problems of our society,” revealed George Pristavu, Developer & Platform Evangelism Lead, Microsoft Romania.

“I strongly believe in the power of change that students can fuel, and we must be aware of the fact that future innovations and tomorrow’s companies will be built by today’s students.

“Imagine Cup is already somewhat of a local tradition, with Romanian teams enjoying excellent results, and being among the winners of the competition’s global finals. I want to wish Team Simplex success at the Imagine Cup 2011 Worldwide Finals in New York City.”

Having topped the Imagine Cup Romania finals for the second year in a row, Team Simplex will join a very select group of rival teams, just 100 from all over the world, in NY between July 8-13 2011.

Cosmin Mihaiu, Simplex, revealed that it’s not the time for the team to rest on its laurels, even though it did manage to win the local finals of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2011 for the second year running.

He did acknowledge that the competition was stronger this year, and that it was harder for them to grab the number one spot.

“We celebrated winning for just a few minutes as we realized that the hardest part of our journey lies ahead. We’ll do our best to bring back the Imagine Cup in Romania.”

Bogdan-Gabriel Bondor, Cristian-Emilian Rosu, Paul-Stelian Sucala, and Dr. Simona Motogna (Team InSight also from „Babeş-Bolyai” University in Cluj-Napoca) were runner up while Team OpenUP from „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, Iași (Bogdan-Gabriel Bondor, Cristian-Emilian Rosu, Paul-Stelian Sucala and Dr. Simona Motogna) placed third.
