A report from Screen Digest shows that the Kinect motion tracking add on from Microsoft for the Xbox 360 have an install base of 7.6 million units before the end of next year, managing to perform marginally better than its rival from Sony.

The PlayStation Move is estimated to have an install base of 7.3 million units at the end of 2011, despite the fact that it was on the market for about one month and a half longer than Kinect.

The Screen Digest report does not say exactly what will make the Kinect more appealing to customers than the PlayStation Move but the small difference in final installed bases suggests that the customers might see the two motion tracking devices as offering a similar experience, with just the number of Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles sold separating the two.

Screen Digest also claims that during 2011 the push for 3D gaming on three dimensional television sets will fail to pick up Steam even though all electronics manufacturers are trying to promote them aggressively on all markets.

Screen Digest suggests that the main problem lies in the glasses that are required to view the 3D content and by the fact that broadcasters place too much importance on transmitting live sports in 3D and not enough in creating recurring viewing experiences based around the new technology.

The publication also predicts that 2011 will not see a mass adoption for 3D television sets that do not require glasses, saying that they need another ten years before they will be developed enough to become mainstream.

Screen Digest also talks about the future of streaming video games services like OnLive and Gaikai, saying that they need to focus more on TV and need to add more video games to their offers in order to gain traction with players and get a bigger slice of the market.
