Just when Microsoft's Xbox 360 console had gotten rid of its hardware problems, specifically the Red Ring of Death, new reports from the UK say that when a new Kinect device is connected to it, the console immediately freezes up and displays the dreaded error.

Older Xbox 360 consoles were really prone to breaking down, largely due to heating problems, at least according to Microsoft, and displayed the "affectionately"-named Red Ring of Death around its Power button.

Now, thanks to improvements in the manufacturing process and the introduction of the new Xbox 360 "Slim" model, things are back to normal, and the console's failure rate is really low.

With the introduction of the Kinect, however, things are going down a steep slope once more, as plenty of owners are reporting that their Xbox 360 broke down when they connected the new device to their console.

According to a report from the BBC, the Kinect can cause the Xbox 360 to display the Red Ring error, with multiple cases reported in the last few weeks, during the holiday season.

"We plugged it [Kinect] in the day we got it but only played it a few times before we got the red lights," a Xbox 360 owner said to the BBC.

"The next day when we tried it again we still had the red rings of death and haven't been able to use it since."

After polling a few online forums, CVG also discovered a few similar incidents.

"I have never had a single issue with my Xbox," one poster wrote. "I got Kinect for Christmas and the screen starting freezing randomly. Then on New Year's eve... BAM I got the red ring. Very sad."

Another read "Yep, I got the Red rings of death on Christmas day The very same day my kids got a Kinect."

Details about the incidents are sketchy, so we don't know for sure if the victims had older Xbox 360 consoles or new devices.

Microsoft was quick to reply to this report, and denied that there is any link between the Kinect and the Xbox 360 failures.

"There is no correlation between the three flashing red lights error and Kinect," the firm said in a statement. "Any new instances of the three flashing red lights error are merely coincidental."

Bah... "Sketchy details" etc. means this could just be coincidence.

One instance would be a coincidence, maybe even 2, but many cases ALL after plugging in the kinnect... I don't believe in coincidence after that.

"Sketchy details" just means the person that posted didn't go into great detail about model etc, and why would they.

I have had my XBOX360 since the initial launch date in 2005 and have never had an issue. I must be lucky? Just plugged in my newly purchased Kinect and guess what...the console is dead. Coincidence?

Same. Had working Xbox for 3 years with no trouble till I hooked up Kinect. Now RROD and a waste of money with no help from Microsoft.

Microsoft needs to fix this issue and compensate everyone affected!

I bought a kinect yesterday and my xbox started freezing at random loading times and today the red ring of death as well... If it's merely coincidence... What a crappy coincidence

I recently purchased the kinect and sure enough started having problems with the console freezing during game play and while in party chat, I am glad I decided to look this topic up before I got the dreaded red ring. Now I just gotta go get my console back from best buy :-\ so happy I got the warranty! :-p

I bought a kinect just before christmas for my xbox 360 and never had problems before. I was playing a game on the system just last week and sure enough i got a Red Right of Death in the middle of the game. It made a terrible clicking sound when it happened too. In contacting Microsoft tech support they gave me the run around and tell me i have to fork over a $100.00 to get it fixed. I guess what they really are saying is that i should sell all of my microsoft crap i have purchased over the years and just go buy a playstation 3.

Thanks for pointing me and my wallet in the right direction Microsoft.

Sincerely,

X Microsoft Gamer

Bought a Kinect for my sons older white xbox on 12-15-2011. A day or so later his older white xbox died. It would not light up or start up at all.( A year ago we had it repaired for red ring and had the fan speed increased so it would run cooler.) We had to go and get a new black slim model. I think that the Kinect is drawing to much power from the older xbox's which is causing them to over heat or burn out! With all the brians they have at Microsoft they have no common sense to know what IxE=P means.

I had the red ring of death about 5 years ago, sent my xbox back to Microsoft and they repaired, just got a kinect and in 4 days got the red ring of death again. Coincidence? I think not. Time to call Microsoft...so much for the kinect party I was going to have this weekend.

Our console was working fine until today. Kids got kinect for xmas, used a few times, now RROD (but only when kinect is connected)

same thing happened to me. I have an older xbox 360 and 2 weeks after getting the kinect and playing it 3 or 4 times, I got the 3 red flashing lights and now it is totally unusable! Microsoft is full of crap that it is merely a coincidence!

Bought my kinect yesterday and had time to hook it up this morning. Before I hooked it up though I played a brand new game. I turned the power off, hooked up the kinect pushed the power button on the console and immediately had the three flashing lights. Called 18004myXBOX and was told that the kinect didn't cause it. Funny how it was working before I connected it. I have an origional Xbox 360... It would cost $100 to send it in and have it repaired or replaced with a refurbished.... Might as well just buy a new one... :(
