Amazon has updated its Kindle iPhone app, adding the ability to pinch to zoom in on images in Kindle books, a landscape mode with auto-rotation, the capability to lock the Kindle app’s screen orientation either in portrait or landscape, two new choices of text color, and the ability to tap on either side of the screen to turn pages.

Amazon's new Whispersync technology saves and synchronizes a customer's bookmarks across their devices, whether it's the original Kindle or an Apple handset. As a result, customers can take all their books with them whatever device they use.

Amazon offers an example, saying that, “Kindle customers can read a few pages on their iPhone or iPod touch and pick up right where they left off on their Kindle or Kindle 2.” The Kindle app for iPhone and iPod touch leverages Apple's Multi-Touch user interface. The main features include:

– Shop for hundreds of thousands of books on your Kindle or online at http://www.amazon.com/kindlestore, and wirelessly transfer the books to your iPhone or iPod touch; – Access your entire library of previously purchased Kindle books stored on Amazon’s servers; – Adjust the text size of books; – Add bookmarks and view notes and highlights; New in Kindle 1.1: – Read in portrait or landscape mode; – Select an alternate background and text colors to improve reading comfort in low light conditions; – Tap on either side of the screen or flick to turn pages; – Pinch to zoom images in books.

When Amazon initially released Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch, Ian Freed, the company's vice president, explained that, “We are excited to bring the new Kindle application to Apple's App Store and think customers are going to love how easy and fun it is to read their Kindle books on the iPhone and iPod touch. Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch is a great way for customers to catch up on their current book wherever they are, like in line at the grocery store or between meetings.”

Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch is available for free download via the iTunes App Store. The latest version of the app can be acquired by clicking on the link below.
