The Kindle app on your iOS device just got a whole lot more books

Amazon launched their Kindle Unlimited package for books and audiobooks. For $9.99 (€7.39) a month you have the chance to read any book in their collection of 600,000 titles.

Amazon used to have a lending program that allowed users to get books from their friends collections or from public libraries that supported it. The new service offers a great new way to get content. And you don't even need a Kindle device. Just by downloading the Kindle app for iOS, you can read all the books you want.

There are currently 600,000 books available for the app and thousands of audiobooks from Audible.com. You can even start reading a book and then continue listening to the same story when you are busy driving or doing something else.

Some of the titles in Amazon's collection are best sellers like "Harry Potter" series, "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, the "Hunger Games" trilogy, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," and "Flash Boys".

Amazon is offering a 30-day free trial as of today, and after that, you can choose to buy into the Unlimited plan for just $9.99 (€7.39) per month. The audiobooks are only available through Whispersync for Voice. You can also get a complimentary three-month Audible membership. After the free Audible trial, you can get a book every month for just $14.95 (€11.06).

Besides the unlimited reading and listening, the new Unlimited Subscription includes "Kindle exclusives" and "Short Reads" (books that are 100 pages and less, including Kindle Singles from Stephen King and other bestseller authors).

Subscribing to an Unlimited Package on the iPhone is not a straight forward process. In fact, there is no way to shop for books on your iOS devices.

If you want to get a book or subscribe, you first need to open Safari, or any other iOS browser, and go to the Kindle Store for iPad or iPhone. You sign in with your Amazon credentials. Then, you can search for the books you want and after that just click "Buy Now with 1-Click."

For the Unlimited subscription, just go to this page and click the button that says "Start your 30-day free trial." In that regard, Amazon is one of the few big app developers that were allowed by Apple not to include the in-app purchase option.
