Optimized for Apple’s iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, the Kindle app allows users to read Kindle books on the go. Amazon has updated the software to version 2.6, adding real page numbers for thousands of books, the ability to view your percentage completed while reading on iPhone, and more.

“You can discover and read over 630,000 books in the Kindle Store, including the latest best sellers and new releases,” goes Amazon’s description of the Kindle iOS app.

Amazon mentions that “You can also read your Kindle books on your Kindle, Kindle DX, PC, Mac, BlackBerry, and Android-based device.”

As users should well know, a feature called “Amazon Whispersync” automatically syncs the last page read across all of a user’s devices, so they can pick up right where they left off.

Bookmarks, notes, and highlights are also synced thanks to Amazon Whispersync.

According to the official changelog for Kindle 2.6, the app now features real page numbers for thousands of books in the Kindle Store, with more coming soon.

“Now you can make proper citations in the classroom or follow along with people reading print books in a book club,” Amazon explains.

Users can view their percentage completed while reading on iPhone, while the home screen now shows the progress through books on iPhone and on iPad in list view, says Amazon.

The ability to lookup words on Google and Wikipedia without leaving the app rounds up the list of new additions in Kindle 2.6 for iOS.

Amazon has also released its Kindle application for Mac OS X as a free download through Apple’s Mac App Store.

Users of the Kindle Mac app will reportedly have access to over 775,000 books in the Kindle Store, including best sellers and new releases.

Amazon Whispersync technology will allow those who use the service on multiple systems to sync their last page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across, so they can pick up where they left off, on any device.
