Amazon has released its Kindle application for Mac OS X as a free download through Apple’s Mac App Store. The Kindle app gives users the ability to read Kindle books on a beautiful, easy-to-use interface, says the online retailer.

Users of the Kindle Mac app will reportedly have access to over 775,000 books in the Kindle Store, including best sellers and new releases.

Amazon Whispersync technology will allow those who use the service on multiple systems to sync their last page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across, so they can pick up where they left off, on any device.

“You can also read your Kindle books on your Kindle, Kindle 3G, Kindle DX, iPhone, iPad, PC, Android phone, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone 7-based device,” the Seattle, Washington-based e-commerce company explains.

“Our Whispersync technology syncs your last page read, notes, bookmarks, and highlights across devices, so you can pick up where you left off.”

Kindle for Mac adds several new features to the application, including a search function, notes and marks, night and sepia reading modes, and multi-column view, Amazon said.

Touted as the solution to the best reading experience available on the Mac, Kindle boasts the following key features, according to its makers:

- Purchase, download, and read hundreds of thousands of books available in the Kindle Store. - Access book previously purchased from the Kindle Store. - Choose from many different font sizes and adjust words per line. - View notes and highlights marked in a book on other Kindle devices. - Get free book samples – read the first chapter free before you decide to buy. - Customize your reading experience by choosing the background color and font size. - Search inside the book to find a character, topic, or section you want to revisit. - Automatically save and synchronize last page read and annotations across all your Kindle devices.

The Kindle Mac application requires a Mac with a 500MHz Intel processor or faster, at least 512MB of RAM, a screen resolution of 800x600 or greater, Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later, and around 100MB of available disk space.
