A bit late to the game, but Kim Kardashian too has taken the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. In fact, she did it some days ago and, believe it or not, no one knew about it: because she did it for a taping of The Ellen DeGeneres show.

Currently in Australia, where she’s accompanying husband Kanye West on tour (they just left London), Kim hasn’t said a peep about the Challenge on her social media accounts. Luckily, Ellen did: she also posted a teaser video on her Instagram, which you can find embedded below.

“This might be the best selfie @KimKardashian ever takes,” the TV host wrote in the caption of the video, announcing the premiere week. As you can see, Kim actually snapped a selfie while she was having a bucket of ice water poured on her head.

What exactly is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a viral Challenge that raises awareness and money for the ALS Association, in the hope of finding a cure for ALS, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Once a friend nominates you for it, you have 24 hours to decide what to do: either donate money to the association or drench yourself in ice water on camera, to get an idea of how ALS affects sufferers. Whatever you decide, you also have to nominate 3 or 4 of your friends.

As you must have heard, most of those nominated chose to pour ice water on themselves. Most of the celebrities who did it also enjoyed a boost in popularity thanks to the media exposure, at least in the early stages of this viral Challenge.

Kim Kardashian selfied her Challenge, because of course

Kim Kardashian is taking the art of selfies (if there ever was such a thing) to new heights – or lows, it’s all a matter of perspective. She has a book of selfies coming out soon, called “Selfish,” and she managed to take a once-charitable endeavor and make it all about herself.

The gist of the Challenge if you’re a celebrity is to use your star power to bring awareness to a good cause, not make that cause about yourself. When Kim took her phone in her hand and selfied her Challenge, which, by the way, was done in front of a live audience for a taped show, she took the charitable part out of the charity gig and made it into just another publicity stunt.

Sir Patrick Stewart can school all of showbiz on how charity is done

If there’s one celebrity who did the ALS Challenge the right way, that’s Sir Patrick Stewart, no doubt about it. The legendary actor also taped himself while doing the Challenge, but he used his star power in the right way – just like he used the ice for a much better cause than dumping it on his head and then on the floor.

As you can see in the second video embedded below, he donated money to the ALS Association (and didn’t disclose the amount, because he’s that much of a gentleman) and used the ice to fix himself a proper, stiff drink. An admirable gesture coming from an admirable man.
