Just like it happened to Reebok and its EasyTone range, Skechers is also in trouble for claiming that its Shape-Ups can strengthen muscles and promote weight loss and health. Still, Kim Kardashian stands by the curved shoe. Not long ago, the reality star became the official
spokesperson for the Shape-Ups. Her contract ended back in January, but she stands by her initial claims that she got in shape with the shoes,
TMZ reports.
The Federal Trade Commission has ruled that Skechers made false claims about the “scientific studies” that prove its shoe works in terms of strengthening the muscles of the leg, posterior and abdomen to ultimately promote fitness and health.
In order to avoid a class lawsuit, the company has already agreed to a $40 million (€31.5 million) payout, which allows all those who bought Shape-Ups to be eligible for a refund, should they want their money back.
Even if she had paid for her shoes, Kim doesn't want the refund, TMZ argues, citing sources close to the star.
“Kim Kardashian doesn't care WHAT the Federal Trade Commission says, she says Skechers worked for her, and THAT'S why she became the company's pitch person,” the e-zine writes.
“Kim made a 1-year deal with the company, which touted Shape-Ups as a shoe that promotes toning and weight loss. The FTC now says the claims are bogus, that there's no proof the shoes do squat,” TMZ further says.
They worked for her though.
“Kim is telling friends and family, when she signed the original deal, she was a habitual Shape-Ups user and it toned the back of her legs and her considerable [backside]. Kim says she wouldn't endorse the shoe now – but she's not throwing her Shape-Ups out. She still has them and might still wear them,” adds the same media outlet.
Even though Skechers has agreed to the massive payout, it's already challenging the FTC ruling in court, saying it plans to pursue further studies to prove the efficacy of the shoe.
Because of their curved and higher sole, Shape-Ups cause instability, which, Skechers argues, forces the muscles to work overtime to maintain balance, thus leading to more definition and, of course, weight loss.
