14 DAY TRIAL // Since she started dating rapper Kanye West, reality star, socialite and business woman Kim Kardashian has been working hard to turn herself into a fashionista herself. In more recent months, she became a fixture on the fashion circuit, especially in Paris, which Kanye likes to call his second home.
They may be “fashion icons only in their own mind,” as world-famous critic Kelly Cutrone so delightfully-mean put it a short while ago, but there’s no denying that Kim and Kanye are fashion’s hottest power couple. And they’re enjoying every bit of attention they’re getting as such.
Yes, but fashion runs in the family
However, that’s not enough for the ever attention-loving Kim. Some weeks ago, I can’t pinpoint the exact date, she was photographed out and about with daughter North, who is a little over 1 year old. Kim was wearing grey jeans and a matching T-shirt, obviously putting her prized curves on full display, and North was dressed in an outfit that seemed to have been chosen specifically to mirror her mother’s.
That was just the first of a long series of appearances of this kind. What Victoria Beckham did a while back with her daughter Harper, when she would occasionally dress her in matching outfits to her own, Kim Kardashian is turning into a rule for each and every one of her appearances.
She’s not satisfied knowing that she finally got the world to think more of her than just “Paris Hilton’s former BFF / personal assistant who cleaned out her closet on demand” or “that big-bootied girl who leaked her own home made adult tape to become famous.” Kim wants you to know that her daughter Nori is just as fashionable as she’s become.
Again, we’re talking about a kid whose main distractions in a day include discovering the world by playing with everything that comes in her hand, including food, pooping and napping.
North West makes Paris Fashion Week debut
Some hours ago, a somber-clad Kim, with Kanye West in tow, took North out of a car and walked her in to the Balenciaga show at Paris Fashion Week. This was the tot’s Paris Fashion Week debut, and as expected, the media went crazy over it.
Some are even praising her for being so stylish, dressed up as she was in one of her dad’s favorite concert getups including leather leggings, boots, leather skirt and a black T-shirt with his tour logo on it. People seem to miss the fact that she’s a kid who can’t even tie her shoelaces yet, let alone put together an outfit.
People also seem to miss the fact that such an outfit must be uncomfortable for adults as well, especially in a well-heated room, so you can imagine how Nori must have been feeling. That probably explains the faces she pulled.
This wasn’t North’s debut, it was Kim’s introduction of her newest “accessory”
Now that we’ve established that a kid of North’s age can’t choose to attend a fashion show or what outfit to wear to said event, we can all agree that Kim is turning her daughter into her latest accessory. The way I see it, there’s absolutely nothing wrong in wanting to dress up your kid and buying for him or her the hottest little fashion items available, even if they only get to wear them once.
If you can afford it, why not; you’re completely free to dispose of your money as you see fit.
Still, there’s a fine line here that Kim seems to be crossing and she’s doing that by making North wear stuff and show up in places where she’s not comfortable. No kid would be ok having so many paparazzi yelling at her (or around her), with all those flashes going off non-stop. On the same note, no 1-year-old kid can possibly have fun at a fashion show – so why drag them there in the first place.
Here’s how Kim explained it: “She started to cry when we were walking out the door, and we couldn’t leave her. So, it was a spur-of-the-moment thing. But it was an amazing fashion show for her to be at for her first show.”
Right.
Just hours later, Kim “could” leave North at home to go on a date with Kanye, so she might as well spare us the lies about how this outing was unplanned. The mere fact that she’s trying so hard to make this less of a thing than she knows it is suggests she’s lying.
Of course, North is Kim’s baby, her own flesh and blood, so she’s entitled to do whatever she sees fit with her, within legal bounds, that is. Still, seeing her dragged all over the place and exposed to the media like this is a bit disheartening – and then listening to her mother gush about how much Nori enjoys the attention from the paparazzi, among other things, is even more so.
