Better than Uncharted 2

Killzone 3 has recently been unveiled, Sony confirming that the new game will be using 3D to bring the conflict with the Helghast to life and that the aim is to create the best looking shooter on gaming consoles. The company is hoping that the PlayStation 3 exclusive will draw in some of the crowd that loves titles like Halo: Reach of Gears of War 3 on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

Hermen Hulst, the leader of the development team at Guerrilla Games, talked to VG247 about how they are aiming to squeeze every bit of power out of the hardware they use, “We're pushing 100 per cent right now. You see, there's Steam coming out of the machine, almost. All the stuff that we're squeezing, it's got everything to do with the scale and the environments and the action that you're seeing on the screen right now.”

Apparently, some of the ambition of the team, which is saying that level footprints are now 10 times bigger than they were when development of Killzone 2 was going on, comes courtesy of some Naughty Dog veterans, who are bringing in the techniques used to make Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, one of the best looking and most complex titles for the PlayStation 3.

Killzone 3 will again task the player with assaulting the Helghast hordes but the main gameplay mechanics will see some significant changes. Jetpacks are added to the mix to enable vertical assaults, coming with their own minigun and delivering aerial dogfights for the more adventurous player.

The game will also feature a new 3D technique that will deliver more depth and will immerse the player in the world it aims to create, and four-player cooperative play is set to be introduced to the series in what seems to be a booming trend when it comes to shooters.
