Sony has confirmed that a standalone version of the multiplayer mode from Killzone 3 is now available as a free download from the PlayStation Store, while those who already have the game will be getting a double XP weekend on Friday, March 2.

Killzone 3 impressed plenty of first person shooter fans on the PlayStation 3 a year ago with top notch graphics, great gameplay and a complex multiplayer mode.

Now, Sony wants to give every PS3 user a chance to experience the multiplayer mode, so a limited version of it has been made available on the PlayStation Store.

“To celebrate Killzone 3’s first anniversary, we’re releasing a standalone version of the game’s online component on PlayStation Store today. Dubbed “Killzone 3 Multiplayer,” it includes the Guerrilla Warfare, Warzone, and Operations game modes, as well as the original Killzone 3 maps and all Killzone 3 DLC maps. Best of all, it’s free to try – you can play any of the maps and modes until you reach the rank of Sergeant I.”

If players want to attain higher ranks while earning four exclusive trophies in the standalone game, then they can unlock the full version by playing $15/€15. This will also net customers access to the Botzone mode where they can play against computer-controlled enemies.

Sony has also confirmed that those who buy Killzone 3’s multiplayer right now or who’ve already bought the full version of Killzone 3, can participate in a Double XP weekend that starts on Friday, March 2, and ends on Monday, March 5.

Those with the free version, as you can imagine, won’t be able to participate in the Double XP weekend, as they’ll reach the rank limit much faster than usual.

Will you try the free Killzone 3 multiplayer mode or are you waiting for Sony to employ this strategy for other games, like Resistance 3? Check out a video of the new release and then share your thoughts below.
