Building on paper

Killzone 2 is getting ready for its big release this month and, following advance reviews from a host of online outlets, the people at Sony and Guerrilla Games are eager to keep the hype level high by telling players what they can expect to unlock in the game as they play through it, taking out red-eyed Helghast soldiers with tour trusty assault rifle.

Victor Zuylen posted on the PlayStation Blog detailing how Intel is used in Killzone 2. Some shooters, like BioShock, opted to offer players the back story of the game universe via such Intel entries scattered throughout the game but Killzone 2 is taking this practice one step further.

As you get to a piece of Helghast Intel in the game, you will be prompted to connect to Killzone.com in order to get a reward. There are a lot of unlockables a player can get from the website, with Zuylen mentioning “propaganda posters you see in-game, others contain details on the wildlife of the Maelstra Barrens or pages from a Helghast soldier’s secret journal.” It seems that no piece of Intel is tied to an unlockable, so what each player gets will be random.

But the big reveal is that Killzone 2 can even get you back to creating objects out of paper. The “venerable art of papercraft” will be employed by players in order to download from Killzone.com the elements needed to create the object pictured in the image attached to this article. Yes, it's bizarre, but maybe Sony and Guerrilla Games have decided that paper craft fans are also Killzone fans.

The game has been pretty well reviewed until now, with most write ups noticing the solid shooter mechanics and the overall feel of the title, which conveys the horror of fighting a war on a hostile world against a fanatic enemy.
